There is a black and white photograph, map location and GPS information for each monument and marker. The complete text from each monument names the unit commanders and subordinate units, gives a timeline of activities in the battle, and lists casualties. The wording is in the dispassionate voice of an official report, but does not conceal the underlying triumphs and tragedies that together tell the story of this largest and deadliest of all Civil War battles.
Also included is an index of the 223 Union and 164 Confederate officers (and one Union sergeant) named on the monuments, along with an index of all subordinate regiments and batteries.
